What an event, what views, what an atmosphere… and what luck to be taken down in a crash after just 2km and fracture my coccyx. After patching up my left thumb to stem the bleeding (and leaving the tip of the thumb somewhere on the road), I got back on and raced to get back to the front. Adrenalin was high and legs were good, and the first sustained climb felt good. Once we hit the first main feed stop (where they had live music, prosecco, sandwiches, a fantastic atmosphere) and quickly filled bidons, it soon became obvious that the adrenalin had run out, and any pedal stroke with more than 200w was absolute agony.
After struggling for another hour or more like this, I told my mate to ride off at his own speed, and I just rode as best I could to limit the pain, enjoy the view, and make it to the finish line after way too many hours in the saddle. But the post-ride area at the fabulous Borgoluce Estate with great food trucks, live music, and of course prosecco, made the ride totally worthwhile.
